 "Picture this!" 2010-06-28
By Michael J. Henk (Fenton, MI)
I needed a camera to take on board while racing sailboats, so I searched for waterproof, shockproof digital point & shoots. I ended up choosing the Fuji FinePix XP10, because it said it fit these requirements and more. I've used the camera for several events now, and like some aspects and dislike some others. The camera provides high-quality pictures, at 12 MP, images are crisp and sharp. Color saturation of images is very good. It is easy to use and self-explanatory, I can hand the camera to another crew-member and they can figure it out quickly and without problems.

I do have a couple of issues with the camera, though, simple things that would make it more practical and easier to use. First,to turn off the beep sound (chime when camera is turned on/off, or when using the menu), you are required to hold a button down for 4 seconds - but this also cancels the flash - there is no way to turn off the beep without turning off the flash function. It doesn't make sense to have to tie these two functions together electronically. Second, although it has a large viewing screen, it is very difficult to see in bright daylight. You are required to hold a hand over the screen to see the image - not handy when sailing a boat! Third, the telephoto length of the lens is shorter than I would have liked. It is hard to frame a distance shot using only the telephoto control. I've figured that this is a symptom of the water-proof nature of the camera, for longer focal length, it would require a moving lens. Finally, on my last camera, it was possible to enlarge and crop a picture while viewing it on the screen, this camera does not appear to have that option.

The camera does what it promised, so I rate it high for those reasons. I guess with a little more research on my part, I would have found that it lacked a couple of features that I had come to consider necessary for the type of photography I do.

 "Meh..." 2010-06-27

Bought this camera to carry with me while fishing. I do a lot of wading so I opted for a water/shock proof since that's what killed my last pocket cam.

My complaints are as follows:

The data cable port is located too close to the hinge of the battery/card bay. Battery is very small. The user manual says to send the camera in after one year to change seals to retain the waterproof rating.

Now I can live with all of the above, but the picture quality just isn't there. I didn't expect this thing to mimic a high dollar SLR, but even when comparing the images to my 2 year old camera (cybershot) the image quality doesn't come close.

I am going to send this one back and try again. charge it to the game :P

"didn't deliver what it promised." 2010-06-27

I had this 2 weeks, went in the pool once in less than 2ft of water took a photo, dried out the camera like detailed in the manual. 3 days later the camera made a gear grinding sound with an error message not in the manual. contacted fujifilm via email, recvd response in 30 minutes to ship it to them for repair. in less than 2 weeks recvd camera back and after taking the 3rd picture the error message came back on the screen. I purchased this at costco which has a 90 day return policy so i returned it and went with the pentax w90 based on reviews here & outside magazine.

i gave the camera a chance, the purchase of this camera was because i have a 2yr old and a 9 month old and they constantly drop electronics, so I wanted a rugged camera that could fit in my pocket. the canon is the ideal rugged camera however it's extrememly bulky. don't waste your time purchasing this camera. i did my research before i bought it but still gave it a chance because of the price point, not worth the hassle. the pictures were not that great. The SR AUTO mode got confused and would take pictures without the flash and camera is slow in between shots. This was reported by other reviewers here and on cnet. Once I use the pentax W90 a while I will post that review.

"Great choice for watery vacations" 2010-06-27

We took the Fuji xp10 to Hawaii for a week and the camera was great. Perfect for taking pictures on the beach as waves and sea spray do not affect it. We took pictures of the kids beachcombing, playing in the surf, and swimming in the ocean. In addition, I took the camera snorkeling and was able to take many pictures of the fish on the reef. Even underwater you can hear the on beep. Fits well in my hand and is very light. Lots of settings allowed me to take great pictures of the sunsets every evening. The picture quality is very good overall.

It does have a few downsides. The controls are not obvious and it can take some fiddling to figure things out. Uploading pictures to a compter via a USB cord is slightly awkward. And, although the camera itself is water and shock resistent, the large view screen ended up with a pretty good scratch when the camera met with some lava rocks.

 "Great little durable camera!" 2010-06-27
By 3 Wee Bairns (Buffalo, NY)
I am replacing a Canon SD960IS which took great pictures, but twice was accidentally turned on while in my pocket - which caused a "lens error". The lens would no longer fully retract nor would it focus, making the camera useless. The first time the camera was under warranty and fixed by Canon at no charge. This time the warranty had expired and would have cost $130 to repair...time for a new camera!

I also have a Canon EOS Rebel and have always had Canons, even in the days of film - I love the quality of Canon pics. However, when I found this Fuji Finepix XP I liked the fact that the lens is internal - and cannot have the same type of accident as my Canon PowerShot Elph. I had no need for underwater photos - although, I'm sure I will use the function now that I have it. But I do like the fact that the camera is waterproof and shockproof. Having 5 children, I don't have to worry as much if one of them grabs the camera and I can take it to the beach, pool, waterpark without being a neurotic mess. Also it is freezeproof, so if I have it in my car in winter in Buffalo, NY and happen to forget to bring it in...not a big deal! Also it is a great size, very small and light - slips easily into a pocket without requiring a case because of its durability!

I took video footage at a concert with this camera and thought it was good quality. Picture quality is far better than I expected after reading other reviews. The macros were impressive! Daylight pics are great - low light photos are not bad, but not as good as Canon. (See photo of dog above - it was shot at night in a dark room with very little light)

All in all I am very happy with this camera and would definitely recommend it!
